Graduate Program

The department offers programs leading to the master of arts and the doctor of philosophy degrees. The department offers courses in the following areas: algebra, analysis, topology, differential equations, mathematical methods for engineering, numerical analysis, mathematical statistics, fluid dynamics, and optimization theory.

GAANN Fellowships

The University of Alabama Mathematics Department was recently awarded $131,265 per year for three years from the U.S. Department of Education’s Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Program. The program provides fellowships to assist graduate students pursuing fields of study that are in national demand. Applications for GAANN fellowships are currently being accepted.

These grants will fund four graduate fellowships per year for three years and include a stipend of up to $30,000 per year (based on need), tuition and other educational expenses. The Project Director is Dr. Vo Liem, Graduate Program Advisor and the Co-director is Dr. Zhijian Wu, Professor and Department Chair. Interested applicants can contact Dr. Liem at vliem at as.ua.edu.
